THE HARBOR GRILL
The Harbor Grill, located inside of the historic Harborside Inn on Water Street, has been a staple for visitors and locals alike. We are seasonal business open from Memorial Day to Labor Day. In peak season we serve breakfast, lunch and dinner 7 days a week. We have a gorgeous outdoor deck for dining with stunning views of Old Harbor. On the opposite side of our deck is "The Wicker Section". Casual dining or cocktails in the sun while you people watch all of Water Street.
THE ORCHID LOUNGE
In 1959, a young business couple came to Block Island for a visit. Soon after their stay, they realized how special the island is, and decided to purchase The Royal Hotel, which is currently known as the Harborside Inn. With the weathered inn, came a small, dark, and rowdy bar called The Orchid Lounge. Some locals used to frequent the notorious watering hole, but many won't reveal too many secrets about this vintage gem. Mostly upon asking, you get a quick smile-maybe a wink.
To find out more, our hunt led us to Florida to visit one of the former owners in her current residence. She welcomed us with open arms and led us to a box full of goodies. She shared black & white photos of the flowered wall paper that gave the bar its name. We saw younger versions of our favorite islanders toasting each other with enormous smiles. She spoke of general shennignas of the waitstaff going out all night, not showing up for work, even though they lived at the hotel. Or how the boys used to keep track of how many drinks they had buy counting the pen marks their buddy had written on their t-shirt. The famous, the notorious, the fisherman, the bar maid, the musician, the dishwasher, the lovers. They were all there, together, in the same room, talking to each other.
The Orchid Lounge at the Royal Hotel was a place where locals and visitors alike could let their hair down, have a drink, and forget about life for awhile. We hope you can do the same in our newly outfitted Orchid Lounge.
